2015 Ice Bucket Calls

The first AriSLA 2015 “ICE Bucket Challenge” Call for research projects on ALS, closed on May 12th.

33 project proposals were received for a total economic request of more than 13 million euros.

Researchers from Italian Universities, public or private research Institutes based in Italy, could submit their project proposals. For profit partners could participate in the research, only by co-funding. The presentation of multi-center projects was encouraged.

FUNDING AREAS – Projects presented could have a maximum duration of 36 months for an expected economic request between 300,000 and 500,000 euros. Specifically, areas of funding were as follows:

  • experimental clinical research that aims to test new molecules, drugs or new therapies to slow down the course of the disease and improve patients quality of life;
  • observational clinical research that aims to identify new disease markers for early diagnosis and more effective prognosis;
  • epidemiological studies aims at understand the impact of the disease on the population;
  • creation of national registers with the purpose of organizing data and information related to the disease, in order to improve and make more effective care and treatment strategies.

METHODOLOGICAL SUPPORT – AriSLA also provided a methodological support service for clinical trials.

EVALUATION PROCESS – As for every Call launched by the Foundation AriSLA selected the proposals submitted through a peer-review process made by its International Scientific Committee, composed by a panel of international experts who evaluated the projects anonymously, in a multi-step process to ensure transparency, objectivity and enhancement of scientific merit.

The second AriSLA 2015 “ICE Bucket Challenge” Call for research projects on ALS, closed on September 15th.

The Call wanted to support the creation of assistive technology aids and services able to promptly respond to patients’ needs, concretely improving their quality of life. To this end, the proposals were presented by innovative start-ups with a social vocation or partnerships made up of non-profit and profit organizations: the active involvement of the Clinical Centers with experience in taking care of patients affected by ALS was fundamental to validate the effectiveness and usability of the proposed aid, thanks to the contribution of patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals.

21 projects proposals from all over the country were submitted to the Call, 11 in the field of motor skills and 10 related to communication.

The total economic value of the submitted proposals was about 5 million euros.

The projects presented were evaluated as always through a careful peer review process made by the experts of the AriSLA International Scientific Committee.
