2017 Call for Research Projects


The “Call for Research Projects 2017“, opened on March 21st and closed on April 13th, 2017, was the tenth Call for proposals launched by AriSLA Foundation to support the excellence of scientific research on ALS in Italy.

143 Letters of Intent (LOI) were submitted – of which 105 were Pilot Grant and 38 Full Grant, for a total economic value of almost 15 million euros.

CALL CHARACTERISTICS – Researchers of Italian Universities and of public and private non-profit research Institutes could submit a project proposal to the Call. Foreign companies and research organizations could participate only by co-funding. The Call was open not only to researchers with a solid curriculum, but also to young people with a minimum of three years’ experience in the laboratory.

FUNDING AREAS – The 2017 AriSLA Call was open both to “Full grants” – projects that develop promising research areas based on a solid background – and to “Pilot grants” – innovative studies aimed at consolidate their preliminary data. The invitation was to present proposals in the field of Basic and Translational Research.

PROJECT DURATION AND BUDGET – For “Pilot grant” the 2017 Call allowed a maximum duration of 12 months and a request of maximum 60,000 euros. The “Full grant“, with a maximum duration of 36 months, could obtain funds up to a maximum of 240,000 euros.

METHOD OF PARTICIPATION – The proposals could be presented from March 21st until April 13th, 2017, through the new online platform that allowed a more efficient process management.

EVALUATION PROCESS – Also for this Call 2017 AriSLA selection process in peer-review was done by the International Scientific Committee, composed of a panel of international experts who evaluated the projects anonymously, in a multi-step process to ensure transparency, objectivity and enhancement of scientific merit.
