June 21: Global Day: The International Alliance against ALS

 

Every year since 1997, the International Alliance (www.alsmndalliance.org), an organization that brings together various associations of patients with ALS, including - the only Italian one - AISLA Onlus, celebrate on June 21 the Global Day to sensitization about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. This is an important event, because represent an appointment of all the International Alliance members for sensitization, information and fundraising events, demonstrating a global commitment for the battle against the SLA.

The date was chosen because June 21 is solstice day - a symbolic turning point - and indicates the hope that this day will mark in the future a reference point for the research about causes, treatment and cure of ALS.

The only way to win this disease is the scientific research and for that, for the Global Day of ALS on June 21, 2011, AISLA Onlus - Italian Association Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, has decided to promote a fundraising campaign for support a scientific research project.

The project will focus, in particular, the investigation of a possible new therapeutic hope for the treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis with cyclophosphamide, supported by autologous hematopoietic stem cells. The coordination of the project will be assigned to the Department of Neurosciences, Ophthalmology and Genetics, University of Genova, while the promoter will be the Clinical Center NEMO - Serena Onlus Foundation, an italian center of excellence for the treatment of neuromuscular diseases, active at the Niguarda Hospital in Milan, where AISLA is a participant member.
